Monday marked 25 years since two young men were found shot to death inside a burning house in Opelika, and CrimeStoppers and local investigators are asking again for the tip that could solve the case, WSFA reported.
On the morning of Sept. 28, 2001, firefighters were called to a house fire on Alabama Avenue. After the fire was out, crews found the bodies of 24-year-old Tramaris D. “Stank” Bryant and 28-year-old Tyrone “Winchie” Brooks. Both had been shot. Detectives followed leads for weeks and months afterward, but the case went cold.
“They have parents, they have relatives, they’re looking for closure,” said Tony Garrett, executive director of CrimeStoppers. “If you know anything about this case, it’s up to you to give these people their closure.” He said a cold case can turn on “just a smidge of information,” and that witnesses who stayed quiet for years sometimes come forward once they feel safe. CrimeStoppers recently contacted the Opelika Police Department about the case.
A cash reward of up to $5,000 is available for information leading to an arrest. Anyone with information about the deaths of Tramaris Bryant and Tyrone Brooks can call CrimeStoppers at 334-215-STOP (7867).
